She first showed interest towards dance around 2 years old when she watched her older sister pack for ballet class every other day - occasionally getting chased for putting her undersized feet in her sister’s pointe shoes, leaving the ribbons trailing - creating a potential tripping hazard. ioi’s parents had no choice but to prematurely enrol her in dance class as well. Having trained in Classical Chinese dance until 18, her personal style is today informed with decorated hand gestures and circular pathways with palms facing out.
Dance has always been the inspiration for her paintings throughout high school. After dancing full time in New York City, ioi felt that a part of her was missing. She found that approaching her career in a one dimensional manner, questionable. Not knowing which art-form to embody, ioi realised that everything is everything; the spirit of creation transcending boundaries between mediums with one feeding the other. She wanted to create her own universe and her painting practice allowed her another channel to develop that. She sees art as a conversation between spacetime. From sculpting her body in space to using her body as a paintbrush; her body is her vessel, tool and muse.
