PAINTING PROCESS

Rooted in dance, my fine art practice seeks to visually translate the gestures of movement. The process derives fundamentally from my movement research based on improvisation, seeing the body as a map in which new sensations could be discovered in the creases between flesh, joints and bones. These discoveries are archived in muscle memory. With the body-as-archive, how can these gestures be preserved? Traditional photographic images, whether still or moving, cannot convey the sensation of movement felt in the body. The kinesthetic essence of dance requires the physical quality of material.
I work primarily on large-scale canvases; up to 200 x 600 cm of space allowing my body to swim across the canvas, performing a series of floorwork with a focus on sensations in the body - contraction, bend, roll and stretch. By arranging my body with a sculptural intention, I attempt to create a non-linear composition that layers over each other in an abstract manner. Tools such as large paint brushes and baby wipes are used as a further extension of my body to add and subtract paint from the canvas.
